24X7 Substation Condition Monitoring System
24X7 Substation Condition Monitoring System
Saving MRO costs while improving asset uptime can be easy. With Hi-Tech’s continuous thermal monitoring solution you can remotely monitor your site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Understanding the thermal profile of critical components in an electrical substation is crucial. Many electric utilities are faced with an aging infrastructure, increasing the risk of blackouts and brownouts. This is because, electrical resistance in the critical assets can cause them to degrade over time (sometimes rapidly). There are many factors that lead to this degradation, including corrosion and loosening of component connections. When current passes over these areas of increased resistance, the energy is given off as heat. Using a thermal imaging camera allows you to effectively “see” these issues so that you can identify potential faults as well as increase the overall reliability of the system.
Thermal imaging cameras are the perfect tool for predicting failures because they make the invisible visible. On a thermal image problems seem to jump right out at you.
Hi-Tech’s Intelligent Substation Monitoring Systems integrates the FLIR IR cameras with necessary automation hardware and in-house software to provide 24×7 scanning and alarm.

Why Continuous Monitoring is
better than Spot Checks?
Most Electric Utilities that traditionally use handheld thermal cameras as a periodic maintenance activity, miss out critical information between visits. With increasing awareness and mission-critical approach, modern Utilities are gradually imbibing the 24×7 condition monitoring program to monitor substation equipment using permanently installed thermal imaging cameras. As opposed to a single snapshot, such systems offer:
More granular data transmitted in real time 24x7, not at weekly/monthly intervals
Better decision making
Improved reliability
Less downtime and fewer power outages
Reduced maintenance costs (repair costs are only about 1-2% of the capital cost of a failure)
Safe, non-contact remote operations, avoids human interference in high voltage areas
Wide area coverage in less time
More accurate measurement, omitting human errors

How it Works
Based on the layout of a switchyard and the number of assets to be covered, the quantity of IR Camera and the lens type is worked out by the Thermography experts of Hi-Tech. The cameras can be mounted in a variety of locations to provide the best measurement characteristics possible. A FLIR thermal camera with telephoto lens mounted centrally at suitable height on any existing Gantry or L.A, can scan a circular area of 100m radius. Following table shows the distance to spot-size ratio for a FLIR A700 camera:
| IR lens, f=70 mm (6°) | Distance | 5 | 10 | 25 | 50 | 100 | m |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Horizontal field of view | 0.55 | 1.1 | 2.74 | 5.49 | 10.97 | m | |
| Vertical field of view | 0.41 | 0.82 | 2.06 | 4.11 | 8.23 | m | |
| Spot Size (IFOV) | 0.86 | 1.71 | 4.29 | 8.57 | 17.14 | mm |
The cameras are mounted on weather-proof IP67 motorised pan-tilt units, to scan the entire substation for hot spots and other anomalies. The PT Unit also houses a 3MP visual IP camera which operates simultaneously with the IR Camera. The PT Unit motors have a long service life and designed for continuous operation, manoeuvring 360° pan angle and ±90° tilt angle.
Hi-Tech’s Substation Monitoring Software
Hi-Tech’s intelligent software has been developed in-house by our proficient software development team in consultation with industry experts and actual end users.
- Hi-Tech’s intelligent software records temperatures of all defined assets.
- Each reading is compared against customized threshold values set by the user.
- If a reading exceeds the threshold, alerts are triggered via email /SMS.
- Generates user configurable reports and trend analysis data.
- The software’s landing page displays:
- SLD of substation showing all assets, grouped by machine category
- Traffic Light based status-at-a-glance:
- Green : All assets in the group are healthy
- Yellow: At least one asset requires attention
- Red : Critical condition requiring immediate action
